Pathways is the official speech education program of Toastmasters International, designed to help members build communication and leadership skills in a flexible, practical way. Through Pathways, members complete structured speech projects and deliver prepared speeches during club meetings, each focused on specific skill development.
Most speeches are prepared over a 2–4 week period, allowing you time to draft, practice, and refine your message while progressing at a pace that fits your schedule.
Choose one of six unique learning paths aligned with your communication and leadership goals
Each path includes 15 structured speech projects, organized into five progressive levels
Projects are completed in sequence, allowing skills to build naturally from one speech to the next
Every project has a clear objective focused on developing a specific communication or leadership skill
You create your speech topic and title while shaping the content to meet the project’s purpose
Most members complete a Path in approximately two years, though timelines vary based on personal goals and availability. As a new member, a good pace is one speech per month—or every other month. Pathways is designed to be flexible, so you’re encouraged to progress at a pace that fits your schedule and comfort level.
After completing a Path, you’re encouraged to choose another and continue building your communication and leadership skills. Many members complete multiple Paths, allowing them to grow in new areas, refine advanced skills, and continue challenging themselves over time.
Below are summaries of each Path, its levels, and the speech projects they contain. Each project focuses on developing a specific communication or leadership skill and provides clear guidelines to help you craft your speech and successfully meet the project objectives.
